It is a wonderful time to address the pink elephant in the room that most people are completely unaware of. Musicians are accustomed to a certain level of disrespect. We are not treated as professionals. We are constantly asked to perform for free without any regard for our time and expertise. Many people assume that music is a little hobby instead of our actual lives. However, there is a different boundary violation when that disrespect is trickled down to music students: children.
Performances help music students to understand why practice must take place. It helps them to find their voice in a very loud world. Self expression is enhanced and a purpose is found. This is very significant.
It is important to safeguard the spotlight for a child to properly grow. The stage is their moment to shine. Anything less is a disservice to what is trying to be accomplished. We as a society have to do better not only for ourselves but for our future.
Music is not a mere background noise for people to enjoy while they consume food and drinks. It is the very essence that sustains life itself.
The next time you see a student musician or a school group performing, please take a moment to pause and engage with the music. Applaud. Ask polite questions. Encourage them. These actions help them to grow. It also makes them feel really good…..
