Mercury in Retrograde: The Summer of 2014

While June of this year will not go down as the best time in my life, it is not the worst time either. There have been great difficulties in every department of my journey but there have also been wonderful moments that would not have happened without the presence of the difficulty. Let us begin with my appointment with the ever popular gynecologist. Yes, you already know what time it is.
As I sat in the patient room awaiting the results from my ultrasound, I was prepared for bad news. My body had been exhibiting signs of distress for quite some time now. However, when she walked in with the nurse practitioner, the room seemed to blink for a moment. Two fibroids, two cysts, and a mass had taken up residence in my uterus. I remarked that there seemed to be a lot of occupants taking up space in there. My first question was about surgery; do you have to go in there? If so, now is the time due to my vacation. There isn’t any danger at this time and August shall find executing a second ultrasound. This whole scene could have gone another route.
Once I got myself home, my fingers started researching alternative approaches to this situation. The first thing that came to my attention was nutrition. A nice diet would assist with the process of trying to get rid of them. Everything that I enjoy on a daily basis had to be eliminated. While the idea of being a bunny rabbit is not necessarily appealing to me, the possible benefits are.
The boxes of microwave popcorn were tossed away. Kernels will now be popped on the stove in coconut oil. The alcohol was replaced with a very fine sparkling grape juice. Coffee will become tea…again. Spinach, onions, mushrooms, & garlic have been consumed since Monday. There isn’t a proper substitute for ice cream; not entirely certain what to do about that. There are also books and experts that I shall consult about the situation.
Between my health and the transition of my beloved father, perhaps tears could flow like a river. Instead, I have chosen to spend time in the company of fun loving friends, visit with my mother, and delight in the wonders of tea. Uplifting literature sustains me throughout the day. Doors are closing around me which means that new ones will open shortly. There are projects that are presenting themselves to keep me busy. July is filled with performances, and my new logo must go on the paperwork that clients need in order to book my services. Why, bellydance has even seen the return of its long lost daughter.
Life will always change. I figured that I can either sit still and let it pass me by, or flow with it. After all, existence is not the goal. Living a life is. How I live it is part of the journey.

Beauty is a Full Time Job

In order to maintain a beautiful appearance, a woman has to work hard. It costs money and constant attention. Once you start to get into the habit of looking in the mirror, other things start to reveal themselves and the fine tuning begins.
Let us begin with hair…..on the head. My hair happens to be natural. It has never been my friend. It requires combing. Brushing. Dye. Trims. Conditioning. Hot oil treatments. Special shampoo. Specified pillow case and scarf. It is not an easy job to maintain an afro of this proportion. Our next visit is body hair. Everywhere.
Eyebrows shape the face and can make a girl look like she has some spice. However, after about two weeks, they have to be shaped again lest one begins to resemble a creature from outer space. Facial hair is another pesky issue. It is not the most attractive thing on a woman’s face yet the damn thing grows. Tweezers and wax are the only things that I can say about such a nuisance. The armpits are a requirement if one plans to wear a tank top or go swimming. Did I hear someone mention the bikini line? The trimming of the bush is a personal matter. Some woman like to allow it to grow wild while others tame it with a weed whacker. My personal opinion is that if I am already spending all of this time on hair, I may as well have the complete neat look. Legs are easy thanks to pink gel and a pink razor.
Dare I bring up clothing? No. I shall back up to fitness and nutrition. One has to exercise and properly hydrate in order to look nice in clothes. Those pesky pounds can actually vanish if one decides to do a couple laps around the block a few times a week without visiting McDonalds. Once this is accomplished, different styles and colors can be found that a girl enjoys modeling for herself and the world.
Nails. When did women fall in love with painted nails? There are so many wonderful colors and just an abundance of styles: gel, acrylic, French, American, SPA! These days I favor glitter and some type of deep red or bizarre purple. It was recently shared with me that once should have a standing nail appointment. Well after dealing with the hair, a girl may not have the time to get to the nail salon. You may have to walk in the morning and work the rest of the day. The proper solution for this is: use your lunch hour.
Is it any wonder that there are so many different goddesses that are called upon for beauty support? A girl needs prayer to handle all of this. Where is my mirror…..

HEALTH: THE CONSTANT BATTLE

The compliments have been rolling in over the last week or two about my weight loss. I do not have an explanation for it as my workout schedule has been quite light; however, I have been preparing three meals daily for about two months now and try to watch what I eat. Apparently, its working. Ever since the Pilates leaned me out in 2009, I was always afraid that I would blow back up without a torturemaster being over me every two seconds. Fortunately for me, I have found a formula that works for my body; nutrition and fitness truly do go hand in hand.

The surroundings in which I are a consideration as well. I eat in silence or listen to very light music so as not to disturb my digestion process. Pausing over the food prior to consumption ensure that the proper energy is being taken in. Each morsel is tasted and relished prior to being swallowed. I have also been told that I like to arrange the food a certain way on my plate so that I can happily partake in my meal which often lasts a minimun of thirty minutes.

Ginger and mint teas are kept on hand to aid in the digestion process and probiotics are always in effect to help my flora and fauna. I stretch more often in the course of a week. When it is time to workout, it is a requirement for my body to sweat so that calories can be burned. This healthy version of me is quite different from the me of about four years ago.

I would eat anything from anywhere: fast food, large portions, coffee with fattening syrups, and late meals and snacks were a regular part of my days. Candy and desserts were my best friends. They were to me what minutes are to an hour; constant companions. In retrospect, I did not know how unhealthy my eating was. Why, I even treat myself to organic meals after working out these days. Change can bring about the most wonderful aspect in a woman’s life.
